Q & As
Q
Hog, Lamb or beef, which is best?
A
It is very much your personal taste but we believe that a free range produce
always tastes better and this is more noticeable in pork than in beef. The
choice of meat is often determined by the size of the event in that lamb is a
smaller meat than a hog which in turn is smaller than a side of beef! We
suggest the following as a rule of thumb:
30 to 50 people - choose lamb, prices usually go down
throughout the summer, but as a guide assume £80/90
Up to 200 people - choose hog, as a guide assume £160/170
100 to 400 people - hog / beef / lamb, price to order
Q
How big does the hog need to be and what will it cost?
A
Prices will vary according to the type of hog that you require depending on
whether you stipulate organic, free range or a specific rare breed. We can
provide a 50/60kg hog ready to roast from £160 (prices may vary month to
month). A hog of this size is enough to feed 100 - 200 people depending on the
format of the event.
As a rule most
butchers can order and supply a whole hog prepared for the spit. The typical
hog is usually 50/60kgs in weight and should feed:
100 plates for a formal reception
120 plates for an informal buffet
160 5" baps/buns
200 4" burger size buns
Q
Can I get smaller hogs?
A
In truth you can get any size of hog that you want but the reality is that the
smaller they are the more expensive they are per kilo in weight. If you want to
feed a smaller number of people then we recommend a lamb roast which is usually
around 15/20kg in weight and will feed approx 1/3 as many as the hog.
Q
How long does it take to roast?
A
For a hog we recommend 5 - 6 hours as a rule every 10kg of meat in a roast you
should allow an hour. The finished cooking time is actually determined by the
temperature of the meat. Lamb being smaller all-round can be cooked in less
time but we usually allow at least 4 hours before being ready to serve.
Q
How easy is a spit roast to use?
A
Simple, the hard parts are getting it to you and set up with the meat correctly
mounted. After that everything is automated, you will need to provide access to
a weatherproof area if wet and a safe electrical supply. If your event does not
have access to electricity the we can hire a generator at extra cost. The meat
is cooked in an enclosed oven over gas burners, all of our equipment is fully
CE rated and regularly serviced by the manufacturer.
Q
If it is so easy why would I want to pay someone to carve and serve?
A
Simple, your event is all about being relaxed and people having a great time,
if you have run a roast before you will be aware of all of the challenges, if
not let us worry about them for you. Roasting a hog or lamb is a time consuming
affair and if you are spending time carving and serving you will not be mixing
and enjoying the event – and probably nor will your partner!
Q
Where can I see a spit roast in action?
A
Our machines are “Titan” catering roasters and are supplied by the UK’s No.1
manufacturers of roasting machines all units are new for the summer season so
you will never see an old blackened oven being supplied! You can compare our
prices against other supplier – you won’t find better! Occasionally we have a
weekend in the summer where we will catering at public event. Any dates in the
coming month will be on the website later this year.
Q
How do I book and when do I pay?
A
Simple, your reservation is secure for the next
5 days whilst you decide. To make your booking guaranteed a deposit of £100 is
required within the next 5 days, an invoice will then be sent to you with the
balance being payable 2 weeks before your event. Payment can be either by cash,
cheque or credit / debit card (you can use Paypal to make a card payment but
there is a small fee 2.5 % that will be applied to cover Paypal charges). To
